Even small actions, such as discarding a cigarette into a burn barrel or onto dry grass, can ignite a fire that may quickly spread to nearby woods or structures. Chief Perry also encourages residents to use caution when grilling or using outdoor fire pits. Grills should be placed at least 10 feet away from homes, decks and other structures. Residents should keep a water hose or bucket of water nearby when grilling or using a fire pit and ensure fires are completely extinguished when finished. If using a burn barrel, the surrounding ground should be wet and water should be readily available to fully put out the fire. If you see smoke or fire, report it immediately by calling 911 so emergency crews can respond as quickly as possible. The Zebulon Fire Department appreciates the assistance of all responding agencies and remains committed to protecting lives and property in the community it proudly serves.
