The Zebulon Police Department would like to extend our sincere congratulations to Corporal Hamm on receiving his Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate through the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Commission. This certificate represents the highest level of achievement in the commission and requires many extensive hours of training, education, and professional experience. Corporal Hamm most recently served as a Detective in our Criminal Investigation Division where he did an outstanding job before deciding that he wanted to share his knowledge with the TAPS Unit. He is currently assigned to the Traffic And Problem Solving (TAPS) Unit in the Patrol Division where he will be able to share his investigative knowledge. This continued commitment to training assures the community that our officers remain professional and are prepared to provide the best service to our community.

Zebulon Police Department Expands K9 Unit with International Recruits

ZEBULON, N.C. (April 1, 2026) — The Zebulon Police Department today announced the expansion of its K9 Unit with the addition of several highly trained miniature dachshunds, recently imported straight from Germany.

Officials say the new officers specialize in low-to-the-ground tracking, advanced snack detection, and rapid response operations, particularly in situations involving unattended food.

Despite their size, the unit has already demonstrated strong performance in field operations, including locating dropped evidence (and anything that smells like bacon or carrots).

The department confirms the team is currently undergoing final evaluations, though early assessments note occasional distractions, including belly rub requests and unauthorized nap breaks.

While this announcement may raise a few eyebrows, our real K9s remain a vital part of keeping Zebulon safe every day.

March is Social Work Month, and in Zebulon, the amazing impact that social workers make is felt every day through the work of the Zebulon Police Department’s CARE Unit.

The CARE Unit, which stands for Community Advocacy and Resource Enhancement, was created by Detective Sergeant Burke after she saw a growing number of Zebulon children being impacted by crime and trauma. As a New Blue fellow, she researched police social work programs and received a microgrant to form the initial Unit. Since the Unit's inception, the number of referrals to the program has increased and the Town hired a full time social worker last fall to lead the Unit.

When officers respond to a call and recognize that a child is a victim, witness or offender of a traumatic event or crime, the officer makes a referral to the CARE Unit. From there, the team follows up to offer help, whether that is connecting families to counseling, helping meet basic needs like food or diapers, or simply being there after a difficult situation.

While officers are limited to responding to the initial crisis, the CARE Unit is able to stay connected with families to make sure families are able to access the resources they need and are not navigating those challenges alone.

That work is led by a dedicated team:
• Emily Edwards, LCSW, MSW, Lead Police Social Worker
• Abigail (Abby) Bateski, BSW, MSW Intern, NC State University
• Josefa Gonzalez-Parral, MSW Intern, NC Central University

Throughout the month of March, the Town of Zebulon is highlighting the women who serve our community across departments as part of Women’s History Month.

Today, we recognize Officer Abate with the Zebulon Police Department.

Officer Abate is a Senior K-9 Handler and has served the Town of Zebulon for five years. She is the first female K-9 handler in the department’s history.

“It’s an honor to serve the Town of Zebulon alongside my K9 partner, working every day to keep our community safe,” said Abate. “To me, being a female K9 handler simply means doing the job with the same commitment and teamwork as anyone in the role. It’s about the bond with my dog and serving the community together.”

In her role, Officer Abate works alongside her K9 partner to locate suspects, track missing persons, and detect illegal substances or evidence. Assigned to special operations, she focuses on proactive enforcement, including traffic stops aimed at combating criminal activity and using her K9 for narcotics detection.

She also responds to drug complaints, assists in locating and building cases involving illegal substances, and provides K9 support to fellow officers and neighboring agencies when needed. Her work supports patrol operations and helps resolve situations more safely and efficiently, requiring constant training, trust, and teamwork.
